Tackle & Boats

obert Vaughan’s Kimberley Fishing is a dedicated sportfishing operation. It follows that we take tackle seriously. Clients can use the Camp’s quality tackle unconditionally, which means there is no charge for loss or damage, or they are welcome to bring their own tackle. But don’t come under-gunned: Kimberley fish are tough customers. Casting and trolling rods and reels in the 8, 10 and 15 kilo classes will cover most situations, as will 8, 10 and 12 weight saltwater fly gear.

New generation gel-spun/ braid line is much preferred to monofilament. We use and recommend 20 -30 pound gel-spun on baitcasting outfits and 30 – 50 pound gel-spun on spinning and trolling outfits. Please note: Flouro or high visibility lines are preferred by your guides.

Saltwater fly fishermen should gear for a diverse range of conditions and target species. Fishing scenarios will include tight mangrove systems where a short cast is all that’s needed to temp a jack or barra to wide, crystalline flats where a prodigious cast might be the only way to present a fly to a cruising threadfin salmon. There are rock bars, deep river snags, strong tidal currents and blue water pelagic feeding frenzies.

When it comes to lures and flys, basically, our policy is the more the merrier. There are simply too many excellent commercial lures available to recommend any specific brand, while favourites come and go. As to colour, that can be an endless, if not entertaining debate. Suffice to say all the popular barra and blue water lures from shallow runners to deep divers will get eaten. Same with poppers, fizzers, soft plastics, lead-head jigs and heavy metal. And any saltwater fly remotely resembling a baitfish is a savage strike getter. Importantly, lures should be fitted with strong, saltwater hardware.

Robert Vaughan’s Kimberley Fishing prides itself on having good equipment. Boats are a combination of two 6.1 metre polyethylene longboats and a 5.0 metre aluminium Broome built Ocean Pearl. All are in commercial survey, carry the approved safety equipment including ship-to-shore radios and have an angler friendly lay out. Roomy and stable, they are customised to fish three anglers in comfort, however, the client to guide ratio in boats (unless otherwise agreed) is 2:1 which allows anglers a luxurious amount of room to cast and play.
